A syndicate of friends from county Mayo were in the National Lottery Office in Dublin today to claim a prize of €152,343 after matching five numbers and the bonus number on the Lotto draw from Wednesday 24th January. They were just one number shy of the then €3.5 million jackpot. The syndicate of five bought their ticket in Costcutter on Killala Road in Ballina

The head of the syndicate described what it was like as he was watching the draw on television. “I was sitting after dinner with the Lotto ticket and the first number, 2, was the one I didn’t have - but after that I just kept crossing off numbers until I realised the draw was over and we had all bar one. It’s very exciting. I felt like the guy from the opening scene of the movie ‘Waking Ned’, except this is no joke!”
