A large crowd turned up last night at a public meeting in Ardnaree, as part of a campaign to save the local post office.

The post office service is provided within Hefferan’s supermarket in Ardnaree, Ballina but the post master is retiring shortly.

There are fears that the post office, which serves a large area, will close permanently as a result, leaving only the main Post Office in Ballina town.

An Post has now opened a public consultation process, to decide on the future of postal services in Ardnaree and people can make submissions in writing before January 26th, while a petition is also being collected in the shop.

Last night’s meeting saw a large crowd attend to voice their opposition to any suggestion that the post office might close permanently.

Matt Farrell, one of the organisers of last night’s meeting, told Midwest News that the crowd that turned up last night shows how strongly people feel about the issue.
