The condition of the Mall in Castlebar at present, in the aftermath of the Christmas ice rink festivities, is a disgrace, according to Castlebar Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne.
The councillor will be raising his concerns this afternoon at the monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
He claims the Mall was not, in his stated opinion, a suitable site for the ice rink, arguing that it required a hard surface like what’s available in the Military Barracks in the town.
He now wants to know who is responsible for repairing the Mall and who will end up paying for its restoration. He also claims that the number of people who sustained injuries on the ice added to the severe congestion at Mayo University Hospital throughout December.
Up to 25,000 people attended the ice rink over the festive period and it brought many visitors and shoppers to the county town.
