Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins says that it is extremely positive that works have commenced this week on the water mains in Ballaghaderreen.
The works have gotten underway following the provision of €325,000 for the project a number of months ago.
Irish Water say there were 14 recorded water bursts on the trunk main between Ballaghaderreen and Tibohine in the last two years over a length of 5.5km. The worst 800m length of this water main (close to Ballaghaderreen Town from Towey's Filling Station out to the Speed Limit Sign) had caused severe disruption for residents and businesses. This project involves the replacement of 800m of asbestos cement piping for the benefit of 1,000 customers.
