  • Up to 300,000 people are expected to travel to the National Ploughing Championships which get underway tomorrow in Screggan, near Tullamore.

    Traffic from the West will be following the Green Route, taking the M6 motorway from Athlone and exiting at Junction 6, where traffic will be directed towards Moate, Ballycumber and Rahan village.

    The 3-day National Ploughing Championships will be officially opened tomorrow morning by President Michael D Higgins.

    Now in its 87th year, it's the biggest agricultural event in Europe and attracts visitors from all over the country to the Co Offaly site.

  • Corofin GAA

    Corofin will look to secure an All-Ireland Final place this weekend when they come up against the Leinster Champions.

    The Connacht Kingpins face Moorefield of Kildare on Saturday at 2pm in Tullamore.

    The 2015 All-Ireland Champions will be hopeful of securing a date in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day.

  • The National Masters Track & Field Championships took place on Saturday August 18 at Tullamore. A packed timetable of events ran from 11am to 7pm.

    Conditions were dry and at times very warm  (23°C) and turned quite humid towards evening with the approaching storm.

    Competition was keen as usual at all levels. Well done to Mayo AC's  five representatives who competed in four age categories and who brought home a total of 14 medals – six track and eight field.

    Heptathlete Patrick Moran led the tally with five medals in the M60 category,  including a discus pb and a great win in the 400m race in 70.18.

    Pauline Moran has had a great week. Following her National Half Marathon W60 gold and W50 team gold last Sunday, she retained her 800 and 1500 metres titles in smooth style.

    Ann Murray collected a bronze in 1500. Martin Peyton had a productive day in the field events winning four bronze medals.

    Pauline Moran W60: gold in 1500 and 800 metres.

    Martin Peyton M65: 4 bronze medals: 35lb WFD (weight for distance), Shot Put, Javelin, Long Jump.

    Ann Murray W50: 4th 800, 3rd 1500 metres

    Patrick Moran M60: Five medals: gold 400m & hammer, Silver in high-jump, Bronze in Discus+PB 31.50m, Bronze in Javelin

    Tom Hunt M70: 800 metres 4th, 5,000 silver, 1500 bronze.
