Roads

  • Mayo County Council needs to take action to remove a dangerous bend at Bruff, Aughamore – that’s according to Fianna Fail Councillor John Caulfield.

At a meeting of the Claremorris Municipal District of Mayo County Council, Councillor Caulfield outlined the dangers posed by this bend, between Bruff Cross and Aughamore, and called on the local authority to take the necessary action to improve safety at this location.

The council has now agreed to do a costing on the project, and Councillor Caulfield told Midwest Radio News Editor Teresa O’Malley that he’s hopeful the funding will be found for this work…

  • A South Mayo Councillor says improvement work needs to be carried out on the R332 Kilmaine to Foxhall Road, given it is now a corridor for the new M18 motorway.

The road is now a priority for funding because it is a strategic road.

A report has been commissioned on the road but funding needs to be secured for a number of flash points according to Fine Gael Cllr Patsy O’Brien.

Cllr O’Brien says there are three areas of the road in particular that need to be dealt with urgently, as he outlined to Midwest News.

  • Gardai are warning motorists to exercise caution on the roads this morning.

While most of the main roads have been gritted, snow and ice in some areas are making driving conditions hazardous.

Caution is advised especially in the Claremorris area, where secondary roads are described as very icy, also on some secondary routes close to Castlebar and in the Castlerea area where Gardai say road conditions are very poor.

Temperatures remain low across the region, so care is advised.

  • Minister Michael Ring has today confirmed that the Government has allocated €22m for the improvement and maintenance of roads in Mayo in 2019.

The allocation for improvement of roads in Mayo is €21,058,639, while the allocation for maintenance of roads is €1,296,569.

Included in the allocation is €10m for the Westport to Turlough road.

Minister Ring says this project is going out for tender in January and all going well a contractor should be onsite by September or October of 2019.

This is just one of a large number of projects to be funded under today’s allocation.

Meanwhile local TD, Denis Naughten has welcomed the allocation of €14.3m investment by Transport Infrastructure Ireland in the national road network throughout County Roscommon.

Minister Naughten says this investment includes €4m for the new section of road at the Hill of Oran, resurfacing of Athleague Village and the Town of Castlerea and the upgrading of sections of the Boyle to Athlone road”.

Funding of €3m has also been set aside to complete the planning and design for the new N5 road between Ballaghaderreen and Scramogue which will not only improve access to the West but allow for the future development of Strokestown, Tulsk, Bellanagare & Frenchpark”.

  • Motorists are being advised to exercise caution on the roads this morning. While most main routes appear to have been treated - some secondary routes are reported as being icy.

A Status Yellow snow-ice warning remains in place until midday tomorrow. It remains very cold this morning with frost and ice on untreated surfaces.

Particular care is advised on secondary and local routes, in sheltered areas and on higher ground, where ice and frost may linger.

  • Motorists are being warned of black ice in some parts of the region this morning.

Gardai say some roads around the Castlerea area are slippery, while there are patches around Boyle, Carrick-on-Shannon and Sligo Town this morning.

While most main routes are treated – caution is urged as temperatures dipped below freezing in many areas last night.

  • Snow and ice are making driving conditions difficult across the region this morning.

Snow is reported on many routes – motorists report hazardous conditions between Foxford and Castlebar this morning, also on routes around Claremorris, Castlebar, Westport Castlerea, Frenchpark Ballaghaderreen,Tulsk, and Sligo Town areas.

Also plenty of snowfall around Roscommon Town this morning and the N60 road between Castlerea and Roscommon is said to be dangerous. Black ice is reported on roads around Crossmolina and Ballina and on roads around Ballymote.

A truck has jack-knifed between Tulsk and Ballinagare blocking both directions.

There are also a number of lorries stuck on the hill in Castleplunkett.

The Kiltimagh/Balla Rd (R342) is closed to facilitate the removal of an overturned vehicle at Ballinamore. Use alternative routes.

There was also a collision close to Healy’s in the Pontoon area.

In Galway following an earlier hail shower, conditions are very slippery on the M6 between J14 Ballinasloe East and J18 Rathmorrissey. Gardai are dealing with a crash westbound in the hard shoulder at J17 Athenry. There is also a crash on the N65 between Loughrea and the motorway.

  • A Claremorris Municipal District Councillor has called on Mayo County Council to identify a scheme of local roads that could be included in a pilot project for more substantial road resurfacing.

Fianna Fail Cllr Damien Ryan made the call at the monthly meeting of Claremorris Municipal District.

He says that at present a wet mix and a macadam is being applied to national and regional roads, as opposed to tar and chips.

He says this is a longer last mix on roads and it’s something that should be considered for local roads.

Cllr Ryan says while it does cost more to apply, there wouldn’t be a need for as much road maintenance afterwards, so the cost would balance out.
