RIAI Architecture Awards

  • Scoil Phadraig primary school in Westport is the runner up in this year's RIAI Irish Architecture Awards

The new Royal College of Surgeons building has been named the public's favourite design at the 2018 Awards. It’s located on York St in Dublin 2 and received 22 per cent of the vote.

In second place was the Scoil Phádraig primary school building in Westport, designed by SJK Architects.  The design of the 16-classroom, 2,400m2 building  is described as respecting its location alongside a church and creates a new public space and link to a pedestrian and cycle greenway.

Each of the 16 classrooms is a distinctive colour, while coloured window frames relate to the stained glass windows in the church.

Coloured paving leads children from town street to school entrance and coloured ceiling panels guide them along the circulation to their coloured classrooms.

A tiered amphitheatre provides a playful outdoor classroom.

The RIAI Irish Architecture Awards are the most prestigious awards of their kind in Ireland.  They celebrate the quality of current work by RIAI Members at home and abroad and create awareness of the important role that architecture plays in delivering Ireland’s societal and economic infrastructure.

The full list of RIAI Irish Architecture Awards winners will be announced this evening at an awards dinner at the Mansion House, Dublin.
