Mayo U17 Celtic Challenge

  • Galway Tribesmen 5-17

    Mayo 0-7

    In Sylane GAA Grounds

    By Tháigh Morley

On a warm summer evenings with two teams bound for Galway, in this year’s Bank of Ireland Celtic Challenge teams played on a perfect evening for hurling.  While in back ground Turf men worked continuously to provide winters heat, in a game where 15 to 17 year old men played hurling in heated conditions.

Galway started the game the stronger  hitting three quick points from play within first 5 minutes with scores from O Reilly, Mahon and Walsh before Mayo’s Shane Morrisroe turned on a six pence to hit the Yew men first score.  As the first half progressed, so did Galway’s strength on the game. All started from Galway’s centre-back Cian Naughton breaking up  Mayo’s attacks after attack  and instructing all good play for the Tribesmen picking out passes through the eye of a needle into Galway’s attack.  From all this cleaver play, Galway worked quick ball into full forward line and Phelim O Reilly scored opening goal of the game.

On the 14th minute of the game, the Tribesmen had a free 21metre line, Galway’s full forward went for goal with Mayo’s  corner back, Josh Howard reacting quickest with a great save and clearance.   Mayo lost position from this clearance, and Galway’s Karl Healy hitting over from 65 metres who was a real torn in Mayo’s side in the opening quater.  From the puck out the Tribesmen worked quick ball and Ethan Costello finishing the ball to the Mayo’s net leaving the score 2.8 to 1 point.  On 20th minute Mayo’s Mathew Walsh won a breaking ball on opposition 65 and worked fantastic score from 45metres on the run.  From this score, Mayo’s half back line grew in character.  With Mayo’s half back growing, Mayo’s attacking options grew and worked two scores before  Mayo’s Man of match Paddy Dozio scoring a line cut from outside the 21metre flag. This wonderful expedition of skill to leave the half time 2.10 to 5points in favour of The Tribesmen.

Straight from the throw in, Mayo went on the attack and their captain Luke Connor was foaled 25metres from goal. Mayo’s shaper shooter Oisin Greally  tapped over the score.  This score seemed to have spurred Mayo on dominating position for next 10 minutes but were only able to break very strong Galway deference once from a well worked score from Oisin Greally leaving his tally to 4 points for the day. With 12 minutes gone in the second half score line stood at Galway lead 2.13 to 7 points.  As the second half grew, the heat took its toll on both teams with benches being emptied.  Galway’s strength and deep in panel come through finishing then second half much stringer scoring 3. 4 unanswered in last 10 minutes of the second half.

On the night their where two men that were head and shoulders above the rest and this was Galway’s Karl Healy and Mayo’s Line-cut specialist Paddy Dozio. Both Men won Best and Fairness awards appointed by match officials. Others who stood out for mention showing great skills were Mayo’s Josh Howard, Danny Hill, Shane Morrisroe, Oisin Greally and Galway’s Darragh Mahon, Niall Kelly, Cian Naughton, Fintan Donnellan and Phelim O Reilly.

Galway: Jason McDonagh, Darragh Mahon, Creg Potter, Kevin Walsh, Cian Naughton,  Darragh O Sullivan, Karl Healy, Phelim O Reilly, Reece Ryan, Niall Kelly, Oran Fahy, Ethan Costello Evan Gyynn
