• Motorists are being advised of dangerous driving conditions across the region this evening due to snowfall and freezing temperatures.

Gardai in Ballina say it has been snowing heavily the past couple of hours and conditions are deteriorating, while a similar situation is reported in Claremorris and the surrounding areas.

There has been significant snowfall in the Roscommon Town area, also on the N5 from Tulsk down to Ballaghaderreen, where driving conditions are reported to be dangerous.

The N17 between Ballinacarrow to Tubbercurry is now partially blocked due to accidents this evening.

  • Due to the adverse weather conditions and in the interests of student and staff safety, the GMIT Letterfrack campus closed today, Wednesday 28 February, at 3pm, and the Mountbellew campus will be closed tomorrow, Thursday 1 March, at 2pm, as driving conditions are already treacherous on secondary rural roads.

We are monitoring and reviewing the situation hourly and at this stage it is possible that Met Eireann and the National Emergency Coordination Group will issue a Red Weather Warning for Connacht early on Friday morning (2 March).

Our two Galway city campuses and and the Mayo campuses are operating as normal today and tomorrow (Thursday 1 March), for now.

We will issue further information and updates, as the situation develops, on our website and our social media platforms. Twitter:  Facebook

Exceptionally cold weather will occur this week. Air and ground temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal, with significant wind chill and penetrating severe frosts. Snow showers, mainly affecting eastern areas on Tuesday, will progressively become more widespread and heavier through midweek. A spell of persistent and heavy snow is expected to extend from the south late Thursday and Thursday night, with significant and disruptive accumulations.
