A convention will be held in Castlebar this evening, for the co-option election of a candidate to the seat on Mayo County Council vacated by Lisa Chambers, following her election to Dail Eireann.
Three candidates have been nominated – David Gallagher and Martin McLoughlin from Castlebar and Marty O’Hora from Kiltimagh.
Voting will get underway at 7pm this evening in An Sportlann, Castlebar, to decide which candidate will be co-opted to the Fianna Fail seat in the Castlebar Municipal Area.
A convention to select a new Fianna Fáil Councillor for Roscommon County Council also takes place today. The vacancy has arisen following the election of Eugene Murphy as a TD for the Roscommon Galway constituency.
He has nominated his brother Joe Murphy to take up the now vacant position for the Boyle Municipal District. However, there are two others also interested in the position, including Seamus Nugent and Aiden Sampey.
Last night Larry Brennan, Seán Óg Higgins and PJ Murray withdrew from the race.
The convention takes place in the Tulsk Inn from lunchtime today.
Elsewhere, a convention will take place in Sligo on Monday for the seat vacated by Eamon Scanlon, there is only one nomination for this seat and that is Keith Henry.
There is also only one nomination for the seat vacated by Anne Rabbitte in Galway and that is Ivan Canning.
